Agriculture has a Culture
Written and performed by Dr. Love-Ese Chile for the Cultivating Resilience Conference
As an avid learner, I take dutiful notes at all the events I attend, but integrating new knowledge requires a different part of the brain. For me, that synthesis takes the shape of composition poems, woven from quotes and fragments that resonate. At the close of the conference, I had the honour of sharing one of those pieces with the audience.
Agriculture has a culture
Food is a language, food is a tool,
Food is medicine, food is justice,
Food is political.
It is life giving infrastructure that impacts every human activity
And is impacted,
By every human activity.
What we eat can change the world
Every bite, every plant, every seed is an act of resistance and resilience.
We have a responsibility to hold space and build relationships
To alleviate and reconcile
And balance the objectives of different groups.
To explore the interplay between the needs of the market
And the needs of our hungry youth.
Innovation does not only mean in technology, but
In thinking,
In leadership,
In relationships,
In love,
In wisdom.
The energy and awkwardness that was embodied in this room today
are feelings that will drive our momentum forward.
